Our society has changed dramatically over the last 60 years. We’re living longer, we’re working harder and the very fabric of our communities has shifted as new technologies have connected us in ways previously unimaginable.
It’s led to a world where, in 2019, we’re living very different lives to what we once were. Over 60, many of us are continuing to work at a high level and less social pressure has meant that we’re more likely to leave behind bad relationships and put ourselves back on the market again.
As such, there are more over 60 daters out there than ever before, with 11.4% of men reporting themselves single over 60 and 16.3% of women reporting the same (and that’s before you count the huge number of divorced or windowed people).
The only issue is, finding those over 60 singletons can feel more difficult than ever before. It’s a situation which has meant many of us shelving our dating ambitions.
Needless to say, that’s the wrong way to look at the situation, because to our eyes, dating over 60 has never been more fun, easier or better than it is right now. Why? Here are a few huge reasons:
Online Dating Exists
Online dating has dramatically changed the way a huge proportion of the world dates, and it’s hard to argue that it’s not for the best.
Mature online dating is one of the fastest growing sectors of the online dating world and as the over 60 dating site scene matures (ahem), millions of people are discovering that it’s simple and fun to meet new people. No more waiting for fate to throw you a bone and no more awkward conversions about whether somebody is available or not, just amazing single over 60s near you.
It’s something that didn’t exist for previous generations but, thankfully, it’s there for us now.
Society Is More Accepting
One of the beautiful things about modern life is that the types of stories which get told and the voices which get amplified are more diverse than they’ve ever been before.
It’s meant that rather than a purely youth-centric society, we now have one which lets others be heard too. Can you imagine a single person over the age of 60 being portrayed as anything other than a lonely oddball 30 or 40 years ago?
Today, people understand that love arrives at different times for each of us and the stigma around being single in our sixties is far less than it has been in the past, and so we are under less pressure to hide our dating habits.
We’re Healthier Than Ever Before
It wasn’t too long ago historically that 60 was a ripe old age. Many who reached that age could no longer walk or were seriously ill, but today? Well, we might as well be 40. Modern science and smarter nutritional advice have meant that not only are we living longer, but we’re healthier and happier in our old age than before too.
For those of us who embark on the dating scene in our sixties then, it means that nothing is off limits for us. We head out on active dates, socialise in public and generally do the things that previous generations of over 60s might not be able to do.
Quite simply, we still have everything to offer from an emotional and a physical sense. We may be over 60, but we’re no less enticing a prospect as a date than we were in our 30s, 40s or 50s.
So, is dating over 60 better than ever? Absolutely.
