The swinging sixties was the decade of great music. From the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Dusty Springfield, the Who, to, and including great songs from Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley, both still enjoyed fame from the 50’s… It was also a time of great social change, old attitudes were challenged and protests against the old establishment eventually helped to change the face of Britain for ever. The most popular form of dress for women was the mini-skirt, until that is, the summer of love in 1967 which saw it abandoned for long hair, flowers and kaftans. The 60’s was also the era of great technological progress, with man’s first ever steps on the moon… This generation have had it all, music, fashion, social change, some of us fought for social, economic and political equality and justice for many disadvantaged groups, including African-Americans, young people, women, gays and lesbians. Students took over college campuses, organised massive demonstrations against the war in Vietnam and occupied parks and other public places.
For those of us born between the years of 1946 to 1964, some of those events will have had a marked effect on who we became. As a group, baby boomers are seen as the wealthiest, most active and physically fit generation up to that time, and amongst the first to grow up genuinely expecting the world to improve.
For those of us who have been divorced or widowed, you may be relieved to know that the older generation, (I prefer to call us the baby boomer generation), has the fastest on-line growing dating market. A recent survey on baby boomers, (All about mature singles dating), found that: 56 per-cent of ages 50 – 75 are “open to dating”, 46 per-cent of divorced singles want a companion, but not to remarry, and 64 per-cent of young boomers (50-59) want to date, marry or find companionship.
Traditional courting, without the aid of a keyboard however, isn’t necessarily dead, with lots of seniors taking the opportunity to join clubs, sign up for classes, enjoying good health and generally making their presence felt. Much more so than in pre baby boomer generations.
That said, the easiest way to meet like-minded people with similar aspirations is on-line, as already stated above. So what exactly is it that men and women of a certain age want?
What we all have in the first instance, is the desire to fall in love. Falling in love is largely unconscious and involves a considerable amount of idealization and projection. We fall in love with what we imagine we have always wanted and needed. That type of powerful idealization of another person almost always leads to disappointment.
As we become older and hopefully a tad wiser, coming to know another person for who they really are, as a separate and real person can lead to a deeper sense of love. Falling in love can begin with friendship. A relationship can develop with someone you trust.
If you find out what it is that you want and value in your life, then the rest should be comparatively easy. So for the generation who had it all, how do you find what is missing in your senior years?
Dating on-line you will meet a variety of men and women, in general they will enlarge your life, and as you are probably aware you will learn something from every person you meet. It goes without saying that sometimes it won’t work, but that goes for the younger generation too. There is effort required when looking for someone to spend time, or the rest of your life with. Be prepared sometimes for hurt feelings. There is no such thing as being too old for the baby boomer generation. It does not follow that men will always look for younger females, most people are looking for someone who understands their background, someone who understands the social changes we have experienced over the last 60 or 70 years.
Be clear about what it is you want, do not be put off if at first you don’t succeed. Be confident in your ability to survive a world that isn’t always easy to navigate. You bring much to the table. This is probably the most significant period of your life, so from one baby boomer to another, enjoy your search and live life to the full.
